Brazil Sets 2026 Timeline for Crypto Regulation as Central Bank Finalizes VASP Rules
Brazil's Central Bank has marked 2026 as the implementation year for long-delayed VIRTUAL Asset Service Provider (VASP) regulations, signaling a major step toward formal oversight of one of Latin America's most active crypto markets. The framework—approved in principle in 2022 but stalled by technical debates—aims to balance innovation with investor protection.
Final standards are expected by late 2025, giving exchanges and custody providers an adaptation window. "The goal is to create a framework that gives companies freedom to innovate but avoids being too bold," said Nagel Paulino of the Central Bank's regulation department, highlighting Brazil's attempt to align with global standards while retaining competitiveness.
